After many years of waiting, the Windjammer reunion concert is finally happening. Al Smith and the Downtown Daytona Business Association have graciously invited us to be part of Island Fest in June 11th 2016. We will feature original members Clarence Wears and Lawrence App along with Selwyn Toby on steelpan and Eric Mason on drums. Our set will include many tunes from our popular 1980s recordings, with Eric taking a shot a recreating some of the vocals on Steve Mello’s quirky compositions. We will also have several special guests sitting in to make for a rollicking fun time.
Windjammer was the house band at the Ocean Deck in Daytona through most of the 80s and became a ubiquitous presence on pool decks and concert stages during Spring Break and other major events. Their mix of reggae, calypso, and other island musics with a pop/rock sensibility was unique at the time and brought awareness of Caribbean music to a much wider audience. They popularized tunes like “Smoke Two Joints”, “Goin Down to the Beach”, “Mud Lips” and “The Snorkel Song” through their recordings and relentless performances. We look forward to this rare opportunity to relive a little bit of local history.
